New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium Nets Federal Funding to Develop Urban Coastal Flood Plan: NOAA Sea Grant Initiative Will Support Community Climate Adaptation

(Sandy Hook, NJ) — The New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium (NJSGC) is one of four programs selected to receive federal funding for a special NOAA Sea Grant initiative supporting community climate adaptation.  The 2013 Community Climate Adaptation Initiative was developed by the NOAA National Sea Grant program to support projects that will help prepare for current and predicted impacts of climate variability and change on America’s coastal communities.  Priority was placed on projects that best identified and addressed the vulnerabilities a coastal community may face adapting to climate change and would produce demonstrable outcomes by the end of the project period. The projects also had to involve active partnership with local (county or municipal) leadership, and include cooperation with relevant state, NOAA, and other Federal agencies, or other appropriate organizations.

Tweed Aquaculture Scholarship Fishing to Raise Funds with New Web Based Donation Site

(Sandy Hook, NJ) — The New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium (NJSGC) is hoping to raise some clams through a newly created web-site: http://www.gofundme.com/StewTweed-Scholarship to help sustain its Stew Tweed Fisheries and Aquaculture Scholarship Fund.  The scholarship fund was established in 2007 in memory of Stew Tweed, a highly respected former 27-year veteran of the organization’s marine advisory program.  Two annual scholarships have become a reliable competitive resource for students who plan to continue their studies in the fields of fisheries and aquaculture.

Congressman Pallone Presents Stew Tweed Fisheries Scholarships and Receives Special Recognition Award at 10th Annual Ocean Fun Days Event

(Sandy Hook, NJ) — The New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium (NJSGC) has announced and awarded the sixth pair of its Stew Tweed Fisheries and Aquaculture Scholarships, established in 2008 in memory of Stew Tweed, a 27-year veteran of the New Jersey Sea Grant Marine Extension Service, who passed away in early 2007. The scholarship checks were presented by Congressman Frank Pallone (D-6th District) during a special ceremony during Ocean Fun Days at the NJSGC’s headquarters at Sandy Hook on Sunday, June 9th, 2013.  Also on hand for the presentation were Stew’s wife Gail and granddaughter Katie Pantelione.

Ocean Fun Days Celebrates Ten Years of Coastal Education Outreach: Family Oriented Event Expecting Record Crowds for 2013

(Sandy Hook, NJ) — Ocean Fun Days will offer two days of free, family-oriented activities with an environmental and educational focus at Island Beach State Park on Saturday June 8th and Sandy Hook on Sunday June 9th.  For the tenth consecutive year, this popular pre-summer event will feature eco-friendly hands-on programs and special activities that help explore and celebrate the wonders of the Jersey Shore.  Drag a seine net, go on a guided beach hike, learn about seaside birds and much more at Ocean Fun Days. Both Ocean Fun Day locations were hard hit by Hurricane Sandy but have been restored and recently reopened to the public.  As a result, event organizers are expecting record crowds this year.
