New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium held its annual Jersey Shore Photo Contest once again this year—and the response was incredible! To celebrate NJSGC’s “Favorite Beaches” contest in 2019, we’ll be announcing the Top 12 photos that received the most votes right before the July Fourth holiday. These images will be used to create the 2020 NJSGC downloadable desktop calendar, which will also feature useful coastal facts and information that will help locals and visitors learn more about and appreciate the Jersey Shore. The twelve finalists will receive an additional waiver for signature prior to publication of the calendar.
Summer is almost over, but with less beach traffic and warmer ocean temperatures, most locals consider September an ideal time to still enjoy the Jersey Shore.
New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium would like to remind everyone to always remain safe and alert during these last few weeks of summer. Rip currents are still a huge danger, and it is never safe to swim without lifeguard supervision. NJSGC’s Rip Current Awareness Program was established to better inform the general public about water hazards and beach safety. As always – “When in doubt, don’t go out!”
Because the season is officially over, several beaches no longer provide daily lifeguard patrols. But thankfully, many still do! Please be advised that every town and city has a different set of rules and regulations. Dates and locations are extremely limited. Find more helpful tips below:

New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium’s partnership with Wright State University, Dayton, OH spans over two decades of educational growth and development.
Earlier this month, NJSGC’s Executive Director Claire Antonucci and Education Program Coordinator Diana Burich joined Wright State University’s Dr. William Slattery and 18 eager graduate students to observe the Garden State’s ever-changing coastline. The group, who are working towards their Masters of Science in Teaching Earth System Science at Wright State, participated in a program developed by Dr. Slattery and NJSGC known as “Ancient Ocean – Modern Ocean.” The two-day expedition included searching for fossils at Poricy Park, surveying the lengthy shores of Sandy Hook, and investigating water quality and other biological parameters aboard a research vessel in Raritan Bay.
