New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium hosts “Underwater Exploration,” an exciting three-hour program that takes place at Jenkinson’s Aquarium in Point Pleasant and is suitable for students from grades 5-12. The dates now available for 2019 are listed below:

The program is divided into three parts: introduction and hands-on activities, building and testing ROVs of students’ designs, and operating an ROV in an exhibit tank to observe resident sea life. For more information, please visit the field trips section of our website.

Please click here for two updated requests for proposals (RFP’s) for New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium’s next funding cycle (2/1/2020 to 1/31/2022). One is for small-scale pilot studies (program development or PD grants), the other is for mid-range and larger research projects.
Research projects within New Jersey’s coasts and watersheds in the following strategic focus areas will be reviewed regardless of funding category: (1) Healthy Coastal Ecosystems; (2) Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture; (3) Resilient Communities and Economies, and (4) Environmental Literacy and Workforce Development. Please consult the attached RFPs for details including research priorities, submission deadlines, formatting instructions, and evaluation and eligibility criteria.
We anticipate supporting up to four (4) PD projects at up to $5,000 per award for one year, up to seven (7) mid-range projects with a maximum budget of $20,000 per year for two years, and up to five (5) larger projects with a maximum budget of $70,000 per year for two years. All awards are contingent on availability of federal funds. Be aware that budgets require a 50% non-federal cost match for each proposal ($1 match for every $2 of Sea Grant funding) and only non-federal funds may be used for the matching contribution.
Please note that proposals for mid-range and larger awards require a preliminary proposal which must be submitted by January 22, 2019. PD grants do not require a pre-proposal. Applications for these studies must be received by June 17, 2019.

The NOAA/Sea Grant Coastal Management Fellowship (UPDATED)
This program offers on-the-job education and training in coastal resource management and policy for postgraduate students and provides assistance to state coastal zone management agencies and NOAA partners. The fellowships start in August 2019 and are available with programs in Minnesota, New Hampshire, Wisconsin, New York, Oregon, and New Jersey. Eligibility requirements, descriptions of the projects, and guidance on how to apply can be found at coast.noaa.gov/fellowship (or view this flyerfor more information).
To be eligible, applicants must complete a Master’s or other advanced degree at an accredited US university between January 1, 2018, and July 31, 2019. A broad range of degrees are applicable to the fellowship because the projects are varied among the host organizations. These two-year opportunity offers a competitive salary, medical benefits, and travel and relocation expense reimbursement.
Application for the 2019 Coastal Management Fellowship Program must be submitted to the Sea Grant office in the state where the student is receiving their degree by Friday, January 18, 2019 5pm local time. The National Marine Fisheries Service/Sea Grant Joint Graduate Fellowship Program in Population and Ecosystem Dynamics and Marine Resource Economics (UPDATED)
Since 1999, Sea Grant and the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) have partnered to train students through this joint fellowship program available to US citizens who are graduate students enrolled in PhD degree programs in academic institutions in the US and its territories. Only US citizens are eligible to apply. Foreign Nationals are not eligible.
The NMFS-Sea Grant Fellowship in Population and Ecosystem Dynamics expects to award at least three new Ph.D. Fellowships in 2019 to students interested in careers related to marine ecosystem and population dynamics with a focus on modeling and managing systems of living marine resources. The emphasis will be on the development and implementation of quantitative methods for assessing marine ecosystems, for assessing the status of fish, invertebrate, and other targeted species stocks and for assessing the status of marine mammals, seabirds, and other protected species.

The 2019 NMFS-Sea Grant Fellowship Program in Marine Resource Economics expects to award one new Ph.D. Fellowship to students interested in careers related to the development and implementation of quantitative methods for assessing the economics of the conservation and management of living marine resources. This fellowship can provide support for up to three years.

Hurricane Sandy made landfall in New Jersey on October 29th, 2012. Take a look back with New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium, and learn what we’re doing as an organization to help promote hurricane safety and storm preparedness.
Throughout November, the New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium offers both full and half-day outdoor programs focused on the historic coastal lifestyle of New Jersey’s natives, the Lenape people. “Lenape and the Jersey Shore” and “Native Ways” are both suitable for students in Grades 2nd -6th.
These “hands-on” programs involve students in problem solving and teamwork through an exploration of Sandy Hook’s marine environment from the perspective of the native people who once lived there. By focusing on coastal community life, students will gain insight into the Lenape lifestyle, organization, and traditions.
Through discussion and instruction your NJSGC Instructor will cover the following key concepts during your Lenape and The Jersey Shore program:
History of the Lenape People
Geographic orientation
Language and lore
Food and tools
Gender roles
Students will participate in some or all of the following activities:
Traditional fishing techniques (boots, nets and buckets supplied by NJSGC)
Plant and animal identification
Food preparation (mortar and pestle demonstration and activity)
Fire by friction activity
Cord braiding necklace craft
Clam shell drilling activity
Hunting techniques
Fishing using a weir
Hoop and spear game
Firewood game

Although current forecasts predict that Hurricane Florence will not directly or severely impact the Garden State, it’s always safer to remain alert and aware while having an emergency plan in place. New Jersey may still see flooding, rip currents, and beach erosion. Please stay informed and aware. At NJSGC, we’re here to help.
Summer is almost over, but with less beach traffic and warmer ocean temperatures, most locals consider September an ideal time to still enjoy the Jersey Shore.
New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium would like to remind everyone to always remain safe and alert during these last few weeks of summer. Rip currents are still a huge danger, and it is never safe to swim without lifeguard supervision. NJSGC’s Rip Current Awareness Program was established to better inform the general public about water hazards and beach safety. As always – “When in doubt, don’t go out!”
Because the season is officially over, several beaches no longer provide daily lifeguard patrols. But thankfully, many still do! Please be advised that every town and city has a different set of rules and regulations. Dates and locations are extremely limited. Find more helpful tips below:
