Marine Science Day Camp

Marine Science Day Camp at the New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium is for children interested in learning more about the ocean and our local marine ecosystem.Camp is held at our Sandy Hook Headquarters. Choose from the sessions listed below. Please note grade–level restrictions.

For 5th and 6th graders

Session 1: July 08 - 12, 2013 or Session 3: July 22 - 26, 2013
Session Time: Monday thru Friday 9:00 am - 3:00 pm
Tuition: $300.00

This is for 5th - 6th graders (as of 9/2013). During these sessions, campers explore Sandy Hook as scientists, historians, and seashore artists. An exciting week of “hands-on” activities includes seining, sieving, plant and animal identification, microscopic investigations, sand sampling, shell collecting and seashore crafts. Throughout the week, campers discover the secrets of the sea as they explore Sandy Hook's salt marshes and sandy beaches. Tours of Fort Hancock's historic sites are included. As the week progresses, campers will grow as coastal stewards, discovering their connection to the aquatic environment.

For 7th and 8th graders

Session 2: July 15 - 19, 2013 or Session 5: August 05 - 09, 2013
Session Time: Monday thru Friday 9:00 am - 3:00 pm
Tuition: $300.00

This session is intended for older campers; 7th or 8th graders (as of 9/2013). The week features an in-depth study of marine science at Sandy Hook. Using the actual tools of the marine scientists, campers assume the role of researchers studying New Jersey's Coastal environment. During this session, campers explore Sandy Hook's barrier beach system and salt marsh. Activities include "hands-on" animal investigations, marine habitat comparisons and water quality monitoring. Microscopes and other scientific equipment will be utilized. Campers will also expand their appreciation of our marine environment and learn new ways to protect it for future generations.

For 3rd and 4th graders

Session 4: July 29 - August 01, 2013
Session Time: Monday thru Thursday 9:00 am - 2:30 pm
Tuition: $240.00

Introduce your child to the excitement of the ocean and begin a lifelong interest in science during these sessions developed especially for younger students; 3rd and 4th graders (as of 9⁄2013). Each session will include laboratory investigations, arts and crafts and games. Campers will get a close-up look at many of Sandy Hook’s exciting marine creatures including horseshoe crabs, fish and turtles. A portion of each day will be spent outdoors exploring Sandy Hook’s bay and beach environments with a special emphasis on safely observing plants and animals and learning how to protect them.
